Chapter 22: The Council Hall
The council hall was full to the doors the next afternoon.
It was the same long room with the same dust in the rafters.
But nobody there looked at Aveline the way they once had.
Twenty lords rose when she walked in.
The old lord with the white beard pulled out a carved chair for her at the foot of the table.
"Sit, my lady," he said. "We have been wrong in this room before, and we'd like to be wrong in a more useful direction."
"Thank you, my lord."
"I voted against you the first time, and for you the second. I should like it recorded."
"It's recorded."
At the head of the table sat Torin, in the king's chair, in black.
He did not preside.
He had asked the council to choose a speaker, and they had chosen the old lord.
The Chancellor stood in irons by the wall, between two guards, and he had lost a great deal of weight in a day.
The Queen was not there.
She sat in a locked room, awaiting a trial, under the eyes of women who would not look at her.
"We have heard the letters," said the old lord. "We have heard the girl."
"We have heard the physician, who has confessed to a great many things."
