On the fourteenth of October the lobby of Markham Biologics hung a new banner over the stairs.
It said RUTH MARKHAM LAB in plain navy letters, and under it a red ribbon crossed the glass doors of Lab 4.
Two hundred people clapped, and Dot stood in front of them in her cardigan with a pair of giant scissors.
"I don't do speeches," she said.
"Ruth would have done forty minutes, so I'm using the extra thirty-nine for tea."
She cut the ribbon, and the lobby roared.
The newspaper on her lab bench that morning had run a short item below the fold.
A judge had given Cameron nine years, and Daphne three for testifying against him.
I read it once, standing by the sink, and put it in the recycling.
At two o'clock I came down the same staircase in a plain ivory dress, with my curls loose to the middle of my back.
The lobby was full of folding chairs, and the board sat in the front row, with the chair's cane across her knees.
Sixty people from the Lund mill filled the middle rows in their good boots.
My father sat in the third row on the aisle, in a tweed jacket, with new reading glasses.
We had been to dinner twice since the summer, and spoken about my mother both times, and I had not forgiven him.
