Chapter 9: The Heartbeat

Rhett's POV

I told Autumn I would explain after her appointment, and she let me.

That was the first thing I noticed about her.

She didn't demand. She just waited, with one hand flat on her stomach and her chin up, and made me feel the weight of every second I had kept quiet.

The prenatal clinic was on the third floor of a brick building, and the waiting room was full of couples.

Men held clipboards. Women held men's hands.

Autumn sat alone with her purse on her lap.

"Does Clifton usually come?" I asked.

"Clifton has never come."

"Never?"

"He's always busy." She said it without any bitterness at all, which was worse. "Every time, he said he'd make the next one."

"I'm not him."

"No. You're the one holding the clipboard."

I had filled it out for her, because her handwriting wobbled and mine did not, and the nurse at the desk had looked at the two of us and plainly doubted my answer.

"Brother-in-law," I said.

"Of course," said the nurse.

They called Autumn's name, and she hesitated at the door.

"Come with me," she said.

"I don't think I should."

"They'll ask who's the father, and I'd like somebody in the room who isn't lying."

I went in.

The technician spread the gel, and Autumn flinched at the cold, and then the screen lit up gray and white.
