Chapter 21: Rosamund Speaks
The Earl came down the stairs one step at a time, and the crowd opened for him and closed again behind.
"Rosamund," he said.
"Go and sit in the carriage."
"No, Papa."
She said it so quietly that the people nearest her leaned in to hear.
"I will not sit in the carriage, and I will not go home."
"I have something to tell you in front of all these people."
"I think it is the only way you will let me say it."
"You are overwrought," said the Earl.
"You have had a trying week."
"I was married four weeks ago," said Rosamund.
Nobody moved.
"This is my husband."
The young man beside her bowed to the room.
He was fair, rather thin, with a cut on his thumb and the look of a man who had not slept.
"I am a surgeon at the Southwark dispensary, my lord," he said.
"I did not ask her to hide it from you for my own sake."
"I asked her to tell you the day we married, and she was afraid."
