Chapter 6: The Doctor
Roman Aldecott had faced down hostile boards, a studio fire and three strikes, and he could not look at the small grey screen.
The obstetrician was a beta woman with a steady hand, and she had not met his eyes once since he walked into the room.
Nobody at the hospital would.
Two nurses had flattened themselves against the corridor wall when he passed, and a security guard had found something urgent to do.
He was used to it.
He stood in the corner of the exam room with his arms folded and his back to the wall.
From there he could see the door and the screen and the omega on the table.
Jamie lay in a paper gown with his shirt rucked up and his jeans low on his hips, and cold gel shining on his stomach.
He looked small on the table, and very young.
He was also, Roman had noticed, looking at the monitor and not at him.
"Here," the doctor said, and tilted the wand. "There's the gestational sac."
A small dark shape on the grey, with a pale speck inside it.
"And that flicker is the heartbeat."
Roman stopped breathing.
The speck pulsed, quick and steady and impossible.
"That's it?" Jamie said. His voice was thin. "That's, that's a heart?"
"It's a very good one. Six weeks. Everything looks textbook."
Jamie laughed, short and wet, and put the back of his wrist against his mouth.
The wall was suddenly the only thing holding Roman up.
He had written the contract himself.
He had read every clause forty times, and chosen the name of the agency and the carrier's age bracket, and paid a man to put a stranger's file on his desk.
He had not been ready for a heartbeat.
Something touched his sleeve.
Jamie had reached out from the table and caught a fistful of his black henley between two fingers, without looking round.
He held on to it, just that, a small tight grip on a scrap of cloth.
