Chapter 17: Say It to Their Faces
Ainsley's POV
The Lakeview Club's private dining room held sixty people, and every one of them was staring at me.
I stood at the back wall in the same work boots, next to Frankie, who had a hand pressed to the paneling to stay upright.
Heath's father had set the long table himself.
The board sat on one side, his mother at the head, and an empty chair at the foot.
Heath stood by the window, in a clean white shirt, with a napkin folded in his hand.
At noon exactly, Summer walked in.
She wore a cream dress and carried a leather folder against her chest.
She looked at the faces, and her smile came up like a lamp.
"Thank you all for coming," she said. "I know it's been a terrible week."
"Sit," Heath's father said.
"I'll stand, Mr. Gresham. This will be quick." She crossed to Heath and laid a hand on his arm. "I have the medical authority here, and the clinic is ready. He's agreed to come with me."
"Have I?" Heath said.
"You said we'd sign in front of everyone, sweetheart."
"I did."
He took the folder from her.
He opened it, looked at the top page, and handed it down the table to his father.
"Read that out," he said.
His father scanned it and frowned.
"This is a notary stamp from Thursday. Heath was in his office all Thursday."
"I was," Heath said. "I never signed it."
A murmur ran down the board.
"Of course you did," Summer said, a little too fast.
"Where did we sign it?"
"Your kitchen."
"My kitchen has no table," Heath said. "I eat standing up."
Somebody near the middle laughed and stopped.
Summer's hand tightened on his arm.
*SUMMER EVERHART. AFFECTION: 99%.*
"Heath, you're confused," she said. "You've been very ill."
