Mom put five mugs on the kitchen table, and every one of them had a rule.
The blue one was for guests.
The Pocono Raceway mug was for Holly, and nobody else was allowed to touch it.
The chipped one was for anyone who had done something.
She set the chipped one in front of Arthur without a word.
"Thank you, Mrs. Finch," Arthur said.
"Don't thank me yet, you've got a face on you," Mom said.
She had come off the night shift with her coat on over her scrubs, and she looked at the one-inch gap at Arthur's wrists.
"You've gotten thin," she said.
"I've been fasting," Arthur said. "It's a family tradition."
Holly, at the end of the table, put a hand over her mouth.
The fifth chair held the man from church.
He had sat in that corner every Monday for seventeen years, with his own spoon, and I had never once looked at him straight.
"I'd like to say something," I said to him, and stood up. "When I was twelve, you paid our gas bill."
He lowered his cup.
"I never said thank you," I said. "Mom did, for a year. I'd like to say it myself. Thank you."
