Chapter 23: The Furnace
Arthur told me through the bathroom door that he had not touched the check.
I was in the shower, and the water was loud, and I thought I had heard wrong.
"What check?" I said.
"My mother's. The one on the counter," Arthur said. "It has no number on it."
"Don't touch it."
"I'm not touching it. I'm standing four feet away with my hands in my armpits."
I turned off the water.
"Your mother called," he said. "The furnace is out again. The man who fixed it Monday said it would hold."
"She says she's fine, she has the oven open."
"The oven open means she's not fine."
"That's what I thought. And I looked at the check," Arthur said.
"I could write nine thousand dollars on it. I wanted to, for a second."
"I wanted you to know I wanted to."
I stood there dripping, with a towel in one hand.
It was the nicest thing a man had ever said through a door to me.
"Thank you for telling me," I said. "Give me four minutes. Leave the check where it is."
