Chapter 18: The Fitting

On Tuesday afternoon Lindy knocked on the door of my condo, and she was carrying a garment bag over her arm.

I had moved back in on Monday.

The boxes were unpacked.

The little clean square on the fridge was the only sign anyone else had lived there.

"Can I come in?"

"Yes."

She walked to the couch, laid the bag across it, and drew the zipper down.

It was a wedding gown.

Ivory satin, lace sleeves, a long skirt, a row of tiny covered buttons up the back.

There was a tag stitched inside the waist. Sayre, L.

"I had my final fitting this morning," she said. "I thought it was for the family photo."

She sat down on the arm of the chair, because her legs would not hold her.

"The seamstress asked which veil I wanted, cathedral or fingertip."

"I said I didn't need a veil, because it's only for a photo."

"She looked at me strangely."

"And then?"

"She said, you're the bride. She said, Mrs. Pennick has been ordering this since March."

I closed my hand on the back of the couch.

"Denise ordered a wedding dress for you in March."

"Three fittings. Cash." Lindy pulled a slip of paper from her pocket and unfolded it. "I took the receipt. I don't know why."

It was dated the fourteenth of March, with Denise's name on the line for the customer.

"The announcement," Lindy said. "That's what it is. At four-forty Denise says my name, I walk to the arch in this, and Dexter is standing there. She means for me to marry him, Casey. In front of a hundred and twenty people, so nobody can say no."

"You'd be marrying my fiancé."
