Chapter 23: After the Week

Kurt's room over the shop had one window, a bed with a quilt, and a view of the black bay.

He closed the door behind us and leaned against it.

For a moment neither of us moved.

"No rules this time," I said.

"None."

"Not even one week."

"I didn't bring a calendar."

I crossed the floor and put my hands flat on his chest.

His heart was hammering, and I felt it through his shirt.

"Take your time," I said. "I want to feel all of it."

He smiled, slow and crooked, and cupped my face in both hands.

He kissed me.

It was not the hard kiss from Rosalie's kitchen, or the angry one from the hotel.

It was patient. He kissed my mouth, my jaw, the soft place under my ear.

By the time he reached my throat, I was holding on to his shoulders to stay upright.

"Kurt."

"I know."

He undid my shirt one button at a time.

He slid it off my shoulders and let it drop.

I stood in the lamplight in my bra and jeans, and he looked at me for a long time.

"You're doing it again," I said.

"What?"

"Looking."

"I'm going to keep doing it."

He knelt in front of me.

He undid my jeans and eased them down my legs, kissing the inside of one knee, then the other.

I kicked free of them and caught my breath.

He kissed his way up my thigh, and I speared my fingers into his hair.

"Bed," I managed.

"Soon."

He pressed his mouth to me through my underwear, and the heat went through me so fast my knees gave way.
