Chapter 21: Founders' Day
Cora's POV
I read the annulment papers standing at the kitchen island, in his shirt, with my feet bare.
Then I read them again.
Then I called him, and the phone rang out.
"He went to a lunch," Pippa said from the stairs.
She was in her pajamas, with her braid over her shoulder and her phone in her hand.
"How do you know?"
"His lawyer texted me. I asked him last week to keep me posted. I'm a patient, I have rights."
"What lunch?"
"The Belcher Foundation's Founders' Day luncheon at the Union League. Noon. Thaddeus is giving a speech."
"Thaddeus lost the chairmanship of the company, not the Foundation."
"Apparently Rafferty wants to watch."
"Why would Rafferty want to watch?"
"Cora," my sister said, very gently, "his lawyer also said there would be police."
I was dressed in four minutes.
The Union League was a stone mansion with a flag over its door.
I went in past a man who tried to stop me and a woman who recognized me, and I followed the sound of a microphone.
The dining room was full of round tables and white cloths.
At the head of it, Thaddeus stood at a lectern with a printed speech and his watch.
Nicolette sat at the high table behind him in navy, very still, with her hands in her lap.
"In forty years, this Foundation has given more than any family in Pennsylvania," Thaddeus said. "And through every difficulty, it has stood for honor."
I found Rafferty against the back wall.
He wore the grey suit from the board meeting, and he did not look at me.
