Chapter 16: After Hours

For a second nobody in my front hall moved.

The rain drummed on the porch roof.

Pamela's umbrella dripped onto the floor.

"Pays for what?" Jason said.

Max looked at him.

Then he looked at his grandmother, and I watched him lose his nerve.

"I don't know," he whispered. "That's just what she said."

Pamela's shoulders lowered.

She smiled, and her smile was all relief.

"Of course he doesn't know. He heard half a sentence through a wall."

She turned to me.

"Or he heard a whole one in this house. What else have you been telling him, Heather?"

"Nothing."

"A ten-year-old doesn't make that up."

"No," I said. "He doesn't."

Pamela's eyes narrowed.

Jason stood up slowly from his crouch.

He looked at his son for a long moment.

"He can stay tonight," he said.

Pamela turned on him.

"Excuse me?"

"He's soaked. He's freezing. He can stay tonight, Mom. I'll get him in the morning."

"Jason Hensley, if you leave that child in this house, I will never..."

She stopped herself.

She looked at me, then at Max holding the waistband of my sweatpants.

Then she shut the umbrella with a snap.

"Fine. One night."
