Bruce's POV

Dolores's invitation stood against my monitor, with her blue line across the bottom: Do bring the nurse.

I had looked at it every morning since Sunday and still hadn't decided what it was for.

My lawyer put the plate report on my desk at nine on Wednesday morning.

She read the invitation first, then sat down without taking off her coat.

"She wants Leah in that church," she said. "Don't hand her the seat."

"The sedan belongs to a private investigator in Dayton," she said. "He bills a company called Hollis Holdings."

"Dolores's company."

"Which also owns the lease on your Dublin lot."

"Thirty-eight of it landed on the Landrys' deposit for the twenty-first."

"That's Leah's money. I can file for a freeze tomorrow."

"The church would cancel."

"The church would cancel Travis's wedding." She looked at me over her glasses. "He'd lose the flowers, the hall and the date."

I knew what she meant.

For eleven years I had wanted him to lose something in front of people.

My father had signed his franchise away in a back office, on the lot I could see on my security screen.
