The woman stepped through the front door carrying her empty crate.
The others followed her with payment cards and folded envelopes.
They filled the hall behind the two men his cousin had invited.
One held up his phone.
The picture on it showed Lucan wearing the chair.
"We've seen the demonstration," he said.
"We've come for our hens."
Roderick looked at the phone, then at Lucan, who made no attempt to take it away.
Winnie turned to the taller visitor.
"You were telling us what our lord required."
"His cousin gave us the instructions," the man said.
"In the lord's name."
Lucan stood beside me, his sleeve warm beneath my hand.
"Tell them in the right name now," he said.
The visitor looked toward the front door, which the village had filled.
"The lord requires two hens from every farm each month."
"Roderick requires," the woman corrected.
The visitor began again with Roderick's name.
"And thirty pounds from every household."
