Chapter 21: Thursday
Thursday started at four in the morning, in Maxwell's truck, with the heater on and nobody talking.
"You can still turn around," he said at the first exit sign for Dayton.
"I know."
"I'll turn around. I'll drive you to the clinic and we'll do rounds, and nobody will say a word about it."
"I know that too."
I watched the dark fields slide by.
In my other life, I had sat in a hundred waiting rooms because nobody asked me if I wanted to.
I had been owed to him, or he had been owed to me, and neither of us could have said which.
"I want to be there," I said. "I want to say I was in the building when it went well."
"And if I get tired, I'm going to stand up and walk out the front door."
"Good," Maxwell said. "I'll carry the coffee."
The waiting room at Miami Valley was the same one with the vending machines and the clock above them.
I stopped in the doorway, and my knees locked.
Maxwell's hand slid into mine and stayed there.
