Chapter 17: Recusal
On Sunday night he asked the Keeper for his phone back.
Esme was in the doorway, and she looked at the coffee can for a long moment.
"Calls in my name, no," she said. "Your own sins, you can phone in."
He sent one email at midnight, to the chairwoman of the St. Brendan's board.
It had one line.
"I am asking to report myself at your meeting in the morning."
The boardroom on the ninth floor had a table and twelve leather chairs.
Matthias stood at the foot of it at eight o'clock on Monday in last week's charcoal suit.
The chairwoman sat at the head in her pearls.
At her left sat the chief executive, whose number he had dialed six digits of.
The chief of surgery sat beside him, scowling, and a lawyer in a blue tie had a legal pad.
"You have the floor, Dr. Ward," the chairwoman said. "Briefly, please."
"I'll be brief."
He had not written anything down.
"On Tuesday, October fourteenth, I was surgeon of the week on the Access Panel."
