Chapter 18: Section Nine

Beckett's POV

Imogen kept our father's will in a locked drawer in her office, and she took it out on Saturday morning.

She set it on the desk between us and put one finger on a paragraph near the bottom of page six.

"Section nine," she said. "Read it aloud."

I read it.

"No share of Lowry Holdings passes outside the family except by a gift made with full knowledge of what it is for. A gift made without that knowledge is void unless the giver confirms it within thirty days."

I read it again, slower.

"Full knowledge," I said.

"Dad wrote it after a partner of his talked him into giving away a hotel for a sad story. He never forgot it."

"Thirty days from what?"

"From the transfer. The day you signed in the boardroom." She turned the page toward me so I could see the date on the stamp. "That was twenty-nine days ago."

I looked at her.

"The director read this will at the funeral," she said. "He was Dad's friend and his lawyer. He has known about section nine for fifteen years, and he waited to use it until you had signed in the dark."

"In the dark."

"You gave her forty percent for a broken wrist." Imogen's voice was very gentle. "You didn't know why she'd gone down those stairs, or what she'd lost. You didn't have full knowledge, Beckett. Page two was the whole point, and you didn't have it."
