Chapter 6: Dani
Dani told me to come to a laundromat on the south side, and I told Beckett I was going home.
He looked at my face and let me go.
It was a long, bright room that smelled of dryer sheets, with a dozen machines going and a television bolted to the wall.
Dani sat on a plastic chair at the back in a gray hoodie with the hood up.
Without the silver dress and the lashes she looked about nineteen.
She was twenty-five.
"You came," she said.
"You asked me to."
"I thought you'd bring security."
"I brought a cane. It's not very fast."
She laughed in a wet, frightened way and wiped her nose on her sleeve.
I sat beside her.
A dryer thumped behind us.
"I'm sorry about the stairs," she said. "I saw her hands go out and I didn't scream. I just stood there. And then you were on the floor and everyone was filming, and I thought, Tanya will kill me if I say anything."
"What does Tanya do to people who say things?"
Dani pulled back one sleeve.
There were four yellow-green marks above her wrist, evenly spaced.
"She did that last month, in the car. For talking to a photographer."
I looked at her wrist for a long moment.
"Dani. Did Beckett know?"
"He never came up."
"Up where?"
"To the apartment." She looked at her hands. "Three weeks of keys and a driver and a card with no limit, and he never came up once. I thought I'd done something wrong. Tanya said it was a game, that he liked making us fight about it. That he'd pick one of us in the end."
