Chapter 17: Pick-Up Line
I was at the school gate at twenty to three, with the nurse beside me and her hands folded over her purse.
Thursday had come in cold and bright, the kind of day when the whole street looks washed.
Stewart was in a meeting with the trust lawyer and the amendment, and he had begged me to wait for him.
"I'll be there in twenty minutes," he'd said on the phone. "Don't go in without me."
"I'm not going in," I said. "I'm standing at the gate."
About thirty parents stood along the iron fence, holding coffees and phones and little jackets.
A silver car pulled up at the curb at five to three.
The driver stayed behind the wheel.
Helena got out in the red coat, with pale gloves, her hair pinned up, carrying a paper shopping bag.
She saw me at once.
She walked straight over and stopped an arm's length away.
"Hallie," she said, in the pleasant voice. "You look tired."
"Helena."
"Is Stewart going to make you do the pickups now?" She glanced at the nurse. "He always did like staff."
