Chapter 22: Decree
The decree was signed on the first Monday of December, in a courtroom so small it had no gallery.
There were six chairs, a clerk, a different judge, and the smell of radiator dust.
I sat at the left table in the navy dress, with my own lawyer beside me.
She was a brisk woman Stewart had not chosen, which was the point.
Across the aisle sat Bradley, in the same plain suit, with the gray-haired lawyer.
He had stopped looking at me altogether.
"Dr. Whitlow has agreed to the full amount claimed," the judge read from the file.
"Two hundred and fourteen thousand dollars in restitution, with interest, on a schedule."
"Yes, Your Honor," Bradley said.
"And a plea is pending in the criminal matter."
"Yes."
"Then I see no reason to delay." She signed. "The marriage is dissolved."
It was over in seconds.
I had expected to feel something large.
