Chapter 23: The Ring Is Not the Point
He did not kneel.
I noticed that first, and I loved him for it.
He stood in the bare front room with the box in his open palm.
It was the way he had once held out his hand to his son.
"Before you say anything, I want to tell you what this is not," Stewart said.
"All right."
"It is not a price for the house."
"It is not Freddie's idea of what he needs."
"It is not a way to keep you from the lease or the practice or the window."
"Then what is it?"
"A question." His voice was lower than I'd ever heard it. "Will you stay?"
I looked at the box.
I looked at the pine floor, and the harbor, and the keys still biting into my other palm.
Eight years ago a man had put a ring on my hand in a county clerk's office.
I had said yes because I was twenty-two and no one else had asked.
This was not that.
"May I say what I want?" I said.
"Please."
"I want the ring," I said.
"I'd like that understood."
"I want to wear it, I want people to see it, and I want your son's school to see it too."
His face went still.
