Chapter 7: What She Asked For

Stewart's lawyer collected the photographs of Bradley's report at six and promised to call by morning.

By ten the house was dark, and Freddie was across the street at the retired nurse's for a sleepover he had asked for, in his way, by carrying his pillow to the front door.

I came downstairs for water and found the study light on.

Stewart stood at the window with his sleeves rolled to the elbow, the printed pages spread across his desk.

He turned when I came in.

"You should be asleep," he said.

"So should you."

I shut the door behind me and leaned against it.

His eyes went from my face to my bare feet and back, slow, and my skin heated.

"I'm still married," I said.

"The marriage ended on top of a cake."

"Legally it didn't."

"I don't care what the paper says." His voice was low and rough. "I care what you say."

"I'm thirty-seven, Hallie. I know what I want."

"I'm thirty years old, and I say I've spent eight of them being furniture."

"Hallie."

"I want to be touched by someone who wants to," I said. "Please."

He crossed the room to me.

His hands went into my hair and he kissed me hard enough to push my head back against the door.

I grabbed his shirt in both fists and pulled him in.

He tasted of whiskey and mint.

His mouth moved down my jaw, then my throat, biting gently, and I heard myself make a sound I didn't know I owned.

"Say it again," he said against my skin.

"Touch me."

He lifted me by the thighs and set me on the edge of the desk.

The pages slid off and fluttered to the floor.

I didn't care about one of them.

He pulled the t-shirt over my head and looked at me in the lamplight.

I'm a size fourteen, with soft hips and a stomach that has never once been flat, and I'd spent a decade being told to hold it in.
