Chapter 10: Two Lines

Pim held the stick up in the kitchen with both hands.

"Two lines," she said.

Nobody moved.

Mee, who had been drying a plate, went on drying it long after it was dry.

Tom the dog sat up in his basket.

Phat felt his chest go tight and loose at the same time, and he said the only thing he could think of.

"The clinic said it might be faint."

"It isn't faint." Pim turned the stick to the window. "Look. It's two bold lines, ai-nong."

"I'm looking."

"Then say something!"

"Congratulations," Phat said, and his voice broke, and she laughed and pulled him into a hug that smelled of pickled mango.

Chak stood by the counter holding a glass of water.

He was staring at the stick.

There was a sharp little sound, and the glass broke in his hand.

Water and blood ran down his wrist into the sink.

"Chak!" Pim said.

"I'm fine."

"You're bleeding on my kitchen."

"It's my kitchen." He looked at the cut with distant surprise. "Pim."
