Chapter 8: Friday at the Clinic
The clinic on Sukhumvit had a fish tank in the waiting room and a nurse who called everyone "khun."
Phat sat under the tank with Pim's handbag on his knees and read the same line of a pamphlet four times.
"You're going to wear a hole in that," Pim said.
She was in a paper gown and her own cardigan, calm and cheerful.
"I'm not nervous."
"You've been holding my handbag for twenty minutes like it's a bomb," Pim said.
"It's heavy."
"It has a lip balm in it." She took it out of his hands and put it on her lap, and then took his hand instead and held it. "Phat. Look at me."
He looked.
"I want this," she said. "You know that. I wanted a baby when I was twenty-four and I didn't want a man who came with it. Chak asked me for a favour, and he doesn't know that he's also giving me one."
"You could have said that before."
"You'd have said it was a bad idea," Pim said.
"It is a bad idea."
"It's the best bad idea I've had." She smiled. "Hold my hand while I go in?"
