Phat found him at midnight on the dock, under the frangipani, smoking a cigarette he didn't smoke.
Two weeks had gone by in the river house.
Pim slept late and ate pickled mango and watched the dog.
Tomorrow morning she would take the test.
Nobody in the house had talked about anything else, and nobody had said a word to Phat that wasn't kind.
He had not said a word to Chak that wasn't a single syllable in thirteen days.
"Say it," Chak said without turning around.
"I'm not the one who has to say anything."
"Say it anyway."
Phat walked down the planks until he stood beside him, with the black river sliding by under the lamps.
"You held her hand," he said. "And you told the doctor she was carrying your child. And then you held mine in a stairwell and said this was yours."
"I did."
"I'm supposed to live in both of those," Phat said.
"You are."
"I won't." His voice cracked, and he hated it. "I'm not a thing you keep in the other pocket. I'm not the part of the week where you get to be yourself. If I'm yours, I want to be what you say it about."
