Chapter 13: Every Text

Tate walked to the microphones with his phone held high, and nobody stopped him.

"Tate, give me that," his father said, on his feet in the front row.

"No, Dad."

His father took one step toward the table.

The principal raised a hand. "Sir. Sit down."

His father sat, slowly, with his jaw working.

Tate pulled a microphone toward him, and the speakers squealed.

"I'm going to read them in order," he said. "I'm not going to skip mine."

Hallie said, "Tate, please," and her voice cracked in the middle.

He didn't look at her.

"November eleventh. Hallie wrote: Dee is the Beacon pick. The counselor told her. I'm the backup, and backups don't go anywhere."

Nobody in the gym coughed.

"December second. Hallie wrote: I watched her type her password again tonight. I have all of it now."

I had been sitting very still.

My hands had gone cold on the arms of the chair.

"December twenty-eighth. Hallie wrote: If Emory leaves her list, the nomination dies. Put in Harvard, Yale, Princeton. Her essays are about the wrong schools, so they'll bounce her. Then she gets a year at community college and I get Atlanta."

A man in the bleachers said, "Jesus."

Tate swallowed.

"New Year's Eve, nine fifty-two. Hallie wrote: I'll turn her phone off at ten-thirty. You do it at ten-forty-one, not before."
