Chapter 14: One Door

"Not tonight," I said into the microphone.

The principal waited.

"I want the colleges to hear it first," I said. "All of them. In writing, from this school, with the texts attached. Then I'll decide about the rest."

Tate's father stood up in the front row and opened his mouth.

"Sit down, Dad," Tate said, without turning.

His father looked at the three hundred faces around him, and he sat.

The principal put his glasses back on.

"That will be done," he said. "Monday morning, with my signature. College Night is over. Please go home."

Nobody moved for a moment.

Then the gym broke into noise, folding chairs and coats and voices, and nobody came near me.

They walked around me and kept their eyes on the floor.

My mom reached the table and took my hand in both of hers.

"You did that perfectly," she said. "I want to hit someone with a chair, but you did it perfectly."

"Mom."

"I know. I'll behave."

She squeezed my fingers and went to stand by the bleachers, where she could see me and not hear me.

It took half an hour for the gym to empty.

Tate left first, with his father's hand clamped on his arm and his phone still in his fist.

At the door, Tate looked back.

I didn't give him anything to look at.

Hallie was the last one in the room.

She had sat down on the bottom bleacher with her coat across her knees, and her mother had gone out to wait in the hatchback without a word.
