Chapter 23: The Interview

The Beacon committee interviewed me on a laptop in the counselor's office, under the poster of a mountain.

Three people looked out of the screen from a conference room in Atlanta.

A woman in the middle had silver hair and a legal pad, and she did the talking.

"Ms. Frost," she said. "We've read the school's report. We've read your article. We've read the correspondence."

"Thank you," I said.

"We'd like to say that what was done to you was shameful, and that you handled it with more composure than most adults would have."

"I didn't feel composed."

"That's the part we find reassuring."

The man on her left smiled.

My mom sat in the corner chair in her good blue cardigan, with her hands pressed flat on her knees.

She had promised to say nothing for the whole thirty minutes.

She had lasted about four.

"Ms. Frost," the silver-haired woman said. "The Beacon is a full ride to Emory. The school has returned the nomination to you. Our committee would be glad to confirm it."

I had written my answer on an index card the night before.

I didn't take the card out.

"Thank you," I said. "I'd like to turn it down."

The room in Atlanta went quiet.

My mom made a small noise, and I didn't look at her.

"May I ask why?" the woman said. Her voice was kind.

"Because I got into Harvard, and my family pays nothing."

"Then, with respect, you'd be choosing between two full rides."
