Chapter 5: Sue Me

The Larkins came to our door on Thursday at four, the afternoon the seventy-two hours ran out.

Tate's father stood on the top step in a camel coat with a leather folder under his arm.

Tate stood two steps below him, looking at his boots.

My mom opened the door in her scrubs, because she had a seven o'clock shift, and she didn't move out of the doorway.

"Come to say your piece?" she said.

"Mrs. Frost. I won't take much of your time."

"Good. I don't have much."

He smiled at that.

"I'm here about the letter," he said. "I'd like to resolve this like neighbors."

I stepped up next to my mom.

Down the street, across from the Larkins' house, Eliot Hendricks was standing at the curb with a shovel in one hand.

His other hand held his phone, lifted slightly, pointed at our porch.

He saw me notice and didn't lower it.

I turned back to Tate's father.

"Delaney," he said warmly. "I've known you since you were a little girl. I know this has been a difficult week."

"It has."

"I know you're an intelligent young woman who made a mistake online."

"Which part was the mistake?" I asked.

His smile held, but it narrowed.

"The post is false. It has damaged my son's reputation at a critical moment in his college process. Emory has seen it."

"Emory has seen it?" my mom said.

"It has circulated." He opened the folder. "I have a short statement here. If Delaney signs it and posts it tonight, we put this behind us. Nobody has to hire anyone."
