Chapter 13: Daylight
He met me in the middle of the road.
The street was wet and empty, and the lamp over us hummed.
I stopped a step short of him and hit him in the chest with the flat of my hand.
It was not hard. He did not move.
"Ten days," I said.
"Odalys."
"I carried that for ten days. I lay in your bed and counted, and you knew what was in year eight."
"I knew," Alister said.
"You could have told me on the porch."
"If I'd told you, you'd have heard a man talking you out of owing him."
His voice was low and even.
"You had to read it in his own hand, from a man who isn't asking you for anything."
"So I kept quiet, and I'm sorry it cost you," he said.
I stood there with my hand on his shirt and my eyes burning.
He had no coat on and the cold was in his sleeve.
"I'm angry at you," I said.
"I can see that."
"I'm angrier at her. And at the whole street. And at me, for thinking I was worth fourteen years."
"You weren't," Alister said.
My mouth fell open.
"You weren't worth fourteen years of waiting," he said, "because I didn't spend them."
"You're worth a lot of things. I picked two Octobers for you, on purpose."
I laughed, and it broke in the middle.
"That's the worst compliment I have ever had."
"I'm not good at them."
"You're getting better," I said.
He put his hand over mine, where it lay flat on his chest, and his heart was going hard under both.
"You said until the thirty-first," he said. "You said after that you don't know. I heard you."
