Chapter 15: What He Didn't Say

Sam's POV

Tillie dialed Margo with her thumb shaking, and I took the phone out of her hand and put it on speaker.

Margo answered on the first ring, whispering.

"She's here. She's in the living room with her tea."

"Where's Posy?" Tillie said.

"Upstairs with the sitter. Odile hasn't asked to see her." A breath. "She asked what you wanted. I said I didn't know."

"What did she say?"

"She said you can have nothing, because you signed. She said it twice."

Tillie closed her eyes.

I put my hand over hers on the sheet, and she turned her palm up under mine without opening them.

"Margo," I said. "Don't sign anything tonight."

"I'm not an idiot." Her voice cracked. "She left a paper on the table. A statement saying Tillie gave Posy up of her own will. She wants my name on it by Monday."

"Then you've got until Monday," Tillie said. "Take a picture of it."

"I will."

The line went dead.

Neither of us slept much after that.

At five I got up to put the kettle on, because I couldn't lie still with her warm against my side and know what I knew.

She came out at six in my shirt, with her hair standing up on one side.

She looked at the eggs, still in their bowl on the counter, gone flat and gray.

She said, "I want to ask you about Thursday."

I'd known she would.

I'd known since the train station, and I had not yet found the words.

"Ask."

"On Thursday I filled in your intake form. I wrote that a doctor had told me I'd bleed to death if I carried this baby."
