Chapter 18: Parked Outside

Margo's SUV was already in the clinic's side lot when we pulled in a little after one.

Its engine was off.

She sat behind the wheel with both hands on it, looking straight ahead, and the dome light threw her face into hard shadow.

I got out of Sam's car and walked to her window.

She rolled it down.

"She's asleep," she whispered. "She fell asleep before the bridge."

"How did you get her?"

"Odile's driver pulled up at the club gate and Odile put her out onto the pavement with her coat." Margo's voice shook. "She said, you wanted her, so take her. She said I had until Monday to put my name on the statement or she would tell the court I'd hidden Posy's real mother for five years."

"Can she do that?"

"She can say anything. She's had judges at her Christmas party for thirty years."

I looked past her at the back seat.

A small shape lay curled across the leather in the blue velvet dress, under Margo's silver wrap.

One shoe had come off.

Her mouth was open a little, and her hand was tucked under her cheek.

"Can I?" I said.

Margo hesitated.

Then she opened her door and stepped out, and she stood aside with her arms wrapped around herself.

I opened the back door as slowly as I have ever done anything.

Posy smelled of bread and cold air.

Her hair had come out of its clip again, auburn at the roots and faintly curled at the ends, and I put out one finger and touched a strand.

It was soft.

It was so soft that I almost couldn't stand it.

I looked at her face.

She had Bancroft's gray eyes, shut. She had my mother's brow, and my chin, and the dimple low in her left cheek that nobody on my side of the family had ever had.
