Chapter 14: The Glass
The agent leaned over my shoulder and looked at the print for a long time.
"That's lovely," she said, which was the most emotion I'd ever heard from her.
Then she sat back down behind her desk and folded her hands.
"Here's the problem," she said. "I can lift that print today. But I have nothing to match it to."
"She's a celebrity. She's been fingerprinted somewhere."
"She hasn't. No arrests, no security clearance, no federal job. I checked."
"So ask her for them."
"I did. Yesterday. Her lawyer said no, very politely." The agent tapped the evidence bag. "To make her give them, I need a warrant. To get a warrant, I need more than a shed that burned and a print I can't match."
"So we need her prints to get her prints."
"Welcome to my job."
I was looking at the photo of the thumbprint on her screen.
"Anything she touches in public," I said. "If she leaves it behind, it's not hers anymore. Right?"
The agent didn't answer.
"Where is she this week?" I asked.
Micah already had his phone out.
"Fort Myer," he said. "Saturday. A Veterans' concert on the parade field. And then an autograph table."
Fort Myer.
The post where I had lived for three years in a brick house with a flagpole.
"I'll go," I said.
The agent looked at me over her glasses.
"I didn't hear that," she said.
The concert was cold and bright and packed.
Eleanor sang in a white sequined jacket with the Capitol dome far off behind the trees.
Afterward, the line for her autograph table snaked all the way around the bleachers.
Micah and I stood in it for an hour and ten minutes.
"This is the longest I've ever waited for anything," he said. "Including you."
"You waited four years for me."
"Yeah, but I was sitting down."
