Chapter 19: What He Told Her

The officers walked her down the hill.

She didn't look back.

The cameras followed her all the way to the sedan, and the door shut on her with a dull thud.

Then every lens on that hill turned back to us.

I looked at Royce.

He was still holding Kit against his chest, but he was looking at the grass.

"Kit," I said gently. "Will you go stand with Micah for a minute? He knows a terrible joke about helium."

Kit looked up at his father.

Royce nodded.

Micah held out his big hand, and Kit took it, and they walked a few graves away.

I turned back.

"Who told her?" I asked.

The colonels and their wives were all still there.

The reporter was still there.

I didn't ask anyone to leave.

Royce lifted his head.

"I did," he said.

"Told her what?"

"Everything." He said it to the stone. "The first year she came back, she asked about you. Like a friend would. Was Nora sleeping? Did the cold get to her? I said you had headaches. I said you couldn't sleep with the window open in the winter, so you kept it sealed."

My throat closed.

"She asked if you lit the candle every night. I said yes. I said you never missed one." His voice cracked. "I was proud of it. I told her you were faithful to my mother."

The colonel's wife made a small sound behind me.

"Later she asked if you were still sick," he said. "If you were worse. I told her you were losing your hair. I told her you'd been to the clinic. I thought she was worried about you."

"She was," I said. "She was checking her work."

He closed his eyes.

"You told her I slept by it in a small sealed room," I said. "You told her when it was working. You told her when I was getting worse, so she'd know to keep going."
