Chapter 31: The Crib

"Stop it," I said, and I pressed the screen, and the warm voice died.

The lab hummed around us in the dark.

"Len." Posy was shaking. "Someone in our building told her about the room."

"Yes."

"Someone we know."

"Yes, I think so."

She made a sound I couldn't read, and then she turned and put her face against my shoulder.

She held on a second longer than she should have, with her arms tight around the top of my belly.

"Go back to the car," I said, into her hair. "Your friend's mom is waiting. I'll fix it. I promise."

"You can't promise that."

"I'm going to anyway."

I walked her down in the elevator and watched the taillights go out of the lot.

Then I went and woke Micah on the cot.

He sat up with the wrench in his fist and his hair standing on end.

"Is it the building?"

"It's the building. Get your boots."

"Where are we going?"

"Home. You've slept here four nights, and I've been sleeping next to a pillow."

He looked at me.

The wrench slowly lowered.

"Is that an order?"

"Yes."

"I love it when you're like this," he said, and went to find his keys.

The house was dark and quiet, with Posy gone and the kitchen candle cold on the table.

I switched off the hall light and took his hand and led him upstairs.

Across from our bedroom, the nursery door stood open.

The crib was finished, at last, in the pale glow from the street, all those silver bars exactly the right way up.
