Chapter 32: The Candle With No Card
I did not drop the box.
I set it down on the reception desk, very gently, and put the lid back on.
"Who else touched this?" I asked.
"Just me and the courier," the receptionist said. "Ms. Sayle, is it a bomb?"
"It's a candle."
"That's worse," she said, and she was right.
I took it upstairs in gloves and photographed it from six angles.
Micah and I carried it to the lab and set it under the fume hood.
We stood back and looked at it for a minute.
It smelled faintly of wax, and of nothing else.
"Do it," I said.
We ran it the way we always did.
The first light came up green.
The second, green.
The wick came up green.
"It's clean," Micah said.
"Run it again."
He ran it again.
"Clean," he said, and then, "Why is it clean?"
I took the candle out from under the hood and turned it in the light.
"Because it isn't meant to hurt anyone," I said. "It's meant to be sent."
"By who?"
I held the base up to the lamp.
Then I took out my phone, found the photo of the brass stamp from the shed, and held it next to the candle.
