Chapter 11: Under His Seal

The grip was cold and the blade was heavy.

I crossed the stone floor to Corvin one step at a time.

Joss watched me from the window.

Sabine watched too, with her thumb turning the silver ring she wore on her right hand.

I had seen that ring a hundred times and never looked at it.

Now I saw the face of it.

It was a signet, small and flat, stamped with the Dawn Watch crest.

It was Joss's second seal.

He had given it to her so she could carry his orders in his name.

Whoever carried them.

I stopped in front of Corvin.

His eyes were steady.

The poison had stripped him pale, and he looked only at me.

"Willa," he said, very low. "Do it fast. Make it count."

"Shut up," I whispered.

His mouth twitched.

I raised the dagger.

In the corner of my eye, Tobin shifted his weight to see better.

Sabine leaned forward.

Joss said softly, "Good girl."

I swung the blade down and cut the black chain at Corvin's left wrist.

The links parted with a clang.

Tobin shouted.

Corvin's arm came free and he caught my waist.

I twisted away from him and let go, and the dagger went straight across the room, into the table, an inch from Joss's hand.

Then I hit Sabine.

I hit her with my shoulder and all my weight, and we crashed to the floor together.

She shrieked.

Her thumb was in my fist, and then the ring was in my fist, and I rolled and came up with it clenched in my hand.

"Get her!" Joss roared.

Tobin lunged.

Corvin was already moving.

He stood up out of the chain with the post still hanging at his one wrist, poison pulling every line of his face, and he put his free forearm across Tobin's throat and drove him bodily against the wall.
