Chapter 16: Spat On
They had left Tobin Merrick on his knees at the water's edge.
His hands were bound behind him with Dawn Watch rope.
His Beta's pin was gone from his collar, and a black eye was swelling shut.
Around him stood the men who had once followed him, more than a hundred of them, with the Warden's witnesses at their backs and the burned city smoking behind.
Corvin walked beside me, steady on both legs, and the mark on my wrist was warm and quiet.
Nobody stared at his stride.
They stared at Tobin.
"Where did you find him?" I asked the young soldier.
"At the ford, Luna." He said the word without noticing. "He was riding for the north road with four men. The Alpha rode ahead and told them to hold the ford while he crossed. Then he cut the ferry rope behind him."
I looked at Tobin.
"He left you."
Tobin said nothing.
"Joss left you at a ford with four men," I said. "He did the same to four hundred. He's practiced."
"He's coming back for me," Tobin said hoarsely.
"Is he?"
"He needs me."
"Your own men dragged you here in a rope."
The Warden stepped forward in her pale cloak.
Behind her, the families of Redcliff stood in a half circle on the shingle.
Mothers, fathers, brothers and wives, in the clothes they had slept in.
Not one of them spoke.
"Tobin Merrick," the Warden said. "You are accused of chaining the gate at Redcliff and setting fire to it. Do you deny it?"
"I obeyed my Alpha."
"That is not a denial."
"I obeyed my Alpha!" Tobin shouted, and his voice cracked. "It was an order! It was his idea! I never wanted any of it!"
A woman in the half circle made a small sound.
