Chapter 4: The Poisoned Cup
I stared at the note, and the handwriting stayed stubbornly his.
Joss was alive.
The raven on my brother's chest tilted its head and waited for an answer.
Corvin took the paper out of my hand before I could stop him.
He read it once.
"Obey the seal," he said. "What seal?"
"I swore to him." My throat was raw. "The night before he rode out. Three times. Any order under his seal, whoever carried it."
"And you obey it."
"I did not know the order would be this."
"Poison in my cup." He held up the vial and turned it so the white powder slid. "A bride who walks into my camp with this, and a note telling her to use it, would be the cleanest assassin I ever met."
"Then you think I came to kill you."
"I think you left your brother cold in the ash an hour ago and you are still holding out your hand to me," Corvin said. "I don't know what I think."
He gave the vial back.
I stared at it.
My whole life I had followed Joss's orders.
I had followed them across a river with one hundred and thirty-seven people on my back.
I looked at the black courtyard and the chain that had been wound from the wrong side.
"He locked them in," I said.
Corvin said nothing.
"He raised the white flag. He lit this." My voice cracked. "And he's alive and he's writing me a love note."
"Yes."
"I want to hear him say why. Before I decide what he is."
"Then we do it where he can't lie to you in private," Corvin said. "The oath feast. Tonight. Both packs."
I closed my fist around the vial.
