Chapter 9: What the Oracle Said
I ran.
Nobody stopped me.
Joss let me go with a small, patient shake of his head.
I did not stop until I reached the tannery yard, a quarter mile down the river, where the drain came out under a rusted iron grate.
The grate was shut.
Corvin's forty riders stood in a ring around it, silent and furious.
Corvin was on his knees at the lock with a pry bar in his hand.
"Welded," he said without turning. "From the inside, within the last day. Somebody saw us coming."
"The man in the hood from the boat."
"Yes."
My legs gave out and I sat down hard on a barrel.
The mark on my wrist throbbed with every breath.
"Joss told me to ask you something," I said.
Corvin stood up and wiped his hands on his coat.
"What oracle did he mean?"
I watched it land.
He did not hide it.
His whole face closed up, and he looked away across the river.
"Corvin."
"Not now."
"Tell me now."
He called over his shoulder.
The shrine keeper from the island stepped out from behind the horses.
The old man had a grey robe tucked up around his knees and a leather case under one arm.
He had followed us all night on a mule.
"This is the keeper of the Moon's shrine at the Blackwater," Corvin said. "He tells the Moon's word on fated mates. Every Alpha in this country goes to him once."
The keeper opened the case.
Inside was a scroll tied with a black ribbon.
"A year ago a man came to my shrine in a hooded cloak," the old man said. "He did not give his name. He paid in gold. He asked me for the one thing I am forbidden to sell, the name of an Alpha's fated mate."
"Whose?" I said.
"The Alpha of Iron Hollow."
My mouth had gone dry.
"I did not sell it," the keeper said. "But the Moon wrote it down on its own, and the man read it over my shoulder before I could cover the page."
