Chapter 15: The Chain Run

The Warden did not move the Games for a missing prisoner.

At dawn she flooded the Bowl.

Black water poured through the east gates until it stood knee-deep over the whole oval, and the stone seats rang with four thousand voices.

"The Chain Run," the announcer called. "Pairs of rivals, one iron cuff each, one chain between them. The first pair across the far wall advances to the Final Four."

Bram was still locked in the Ashfall tent, so I stood alone at the line.

The Warden reached into the urn and drew two disks.

"Ashfall, Eira," she read.

Her hand was perfectly steady on the second disk.

"Blackpine, Ronan Strathmore."

The stands exploded.

Calista, in the Blackpine box, stood up so fast that her chair went over.

A guard fastened an iron cuff around my left wrist, and another around Ronan's right.

The chain between us was three feet long.

"Don't fall behind," I said.

"Don't pull my bad arm off."

The horn blew.

We hit the water running.

It dragged at my thighs and sucked at my boots, and the first obstacle was a rope bridge slung ten feet above it.

A pair from Red Lake came off the bridge at us with their fists swinging.

I ducked, and the chain snapped taut, and Ronan went over my back.

He landed on the first Red Lake man with both knees and drove him under the water.

I hooked the second one's ankle and dumped him.

"Left," Ronan said.

I went left, and a swinging log the size of a door went past my right ear.

"Up."

I jumped, and he threw me.

I landed on the net wall with the chain humming and hauled him up after me by one arm.

His breath was loud and fast in my ear.

I felt his wolf pushing under his skin, and it did not feel like fighting anymore.
