Chapter 16: What the Moon Keeps

Odessa led me out past the last tent to a flat rock above the creek, where nobody could hear us.

She sat down on it with a grunt and pried the lid off the tin.

Inside lay a folded square of brown paper, a dried sprig of pine, and a braid of black hair tied with thread.

"Your mother's," she said. "Her hair, and her handwriting."

I picked up the braid.

It was the same color as mine.

"She was a Hollow wolf," Odessa said. "So was her mother, and hers. There were thirty families once. The packs hunted them for the howl, because a wolf who hears it can't fight."

"I thought they were extinct."

"So did the Compact. We kept it that way."

I unfolded the paper with careful fingers.

The handwriting was slanted and quick, and the ink had turned brown.

Eira, if you read this, your wolf has woken and I am not there to see it.

You will be small. Be glad. Small wolves are overlooked, and the overlooked live.

Our voice belongs to the Moon. What a Hollow says aloud under her light, she keeps, and the Moon never lets us take it back.

I read it twice.

The creek ran loud over the stones below.

"Never out of spite," I said slowly. "That's why you told me not to answer him."
