Chapter 21: Ronan's POV

Ronan's POV

I knelt on the turf with my claws out and four thousand wolves looking at me, and for the first time in my life I did not care who saw.

"Don't ask for me," I said again.

My voice cracked, and I let it.

"Warden. Wolves of the Compact. Hear this."

The Bowl hushed itself.

"My wolf is starving. Everyone knows it."

"Some of you came to my door with a cure, and some with a daughter."

"I sent every one of you away."

I looked at Eira.

She stood at the rope with a blanket clutched around her and blood on her mouth, white as the moon coming up behind her.

"There is a way to end it," I said. "It lies in one person's hands. I will not be freed by her, or bought free, or begged free. If she says the words, I want them to be hers."

"And if she never says them?" the Warden asked quietly.

"Then I will go on as I am."

I heard a woman gasp, somewhere in the stands.

"A Boon is for what a champion wants. I won't have her spend it on me."

I bowed my head and put both hands flat on the grass.

I knelt there until my knees ached, and I did not look up.

When a small, hard hand slid under my chin and lifted my face, I knew whose it was before I saw her.

"Get up," Eira said.

"Eira."

"Get up, you stubborn idiot, you're bleeding on the Compact's turf."

She had no pity in her face, and it was the kindest thing anyone had ever done for me.

She took me back to the stable.

I tried to walk on my own and made it twenty yards.

She put her shoulder under my arm without a word, as she had on the day of the silver.

We went the rest of the way together through the torchlit camp.

Wolves fell silent as we passed and stepped out of the path.

Inside, she lit the lantern and sat me on the cot beside the green and cream scarf on its nail.
