Chapter 10: You Should Have Told Me

"Then why was this phone in Nan's chest?" I said. "Why wasn't it in front of the elders?"

"I told her to put it away."

"Why?"

He stood in the cold with the creek roaring behind him and did not look away.

"You were laughing at breakfast," he said. "I thought, one more week."

"One more week," I said.

"Then I thought it again the next morning, and the next, until I couldn't stop."

I stepped closer.

I could feel the heat coming off his body in the freezing air, and I hated that I could.

"You looked at me every night," I said, "and you knew I had a son across the water. You watched me hum in your kitchen while he coughed himself blue in a house with no mother in it."

"Yes."

"You watched me go to bed. You handed me the cup."

"Ro..."

"I'm not done."

He shut his mouth.

"You should have told me when I got strong," I said. "The day the root faded, you should have sat me down and said, here is who you are, here is what you asked me for, now you choose. That was the deal. I made the deal with the version of me that was drowning. You were supposed to keep it for her, and hand me back to myself."

My voice broke on the last word.
