Chapter 13: Grey Nightshade

I stood by the dripping coat and read the label four times.

*J. Night tea. Two pinches. L.*

I took the tin to the bedroom and put it on the quilt beside Ewan's hand.

He woke at once, the way he always did.

"You said no secrets," I said. "So I'm not going to hide this."

He sat up and read the lid.

His face changed, and he did not try to hide that either.

"Do you know that handwriting?" I asked.

"No. I've never set foot in Ironwood's infirmary." He turned the tin over in his big hands. "But you have."

"I know it from every jar on every shelf."

"Then you know who wrote it."

"Lorna," I said.

Neither of us said anything more, because there was nothing more to say yet.

At first light, Jory woke on the couch with the blankets kicked off and his pupils nearly grey again.

I sat on the floor beside him and held up the tin.

His whole face went tight.

"That's mine," he said. "Give it back."

"Where did you get it?"

"Lorna gives it to me every night. It's my medicine. She says if I skip it, I'll cough until I die."

My hands went cold.

"Jory, did you take some under the cedar?"

He looked at the floor.

"I was so cold," he whispered. "And my chest hurt, and I didn't have anybody to make me the tea. So I ate it dry. A big handful. It tastes like burnt grass."

"Sweetheart, how long has she been giving it to you?"

He thought about it.
