Chapter 4: One Night Without the Tea

We crossed the creek in the dark, and Ewan did not let go of my hand.

At the cabin, he lit the stove and put the kettle on, as he did every night.

I stood in the middle of the room with creek water drying on my jeans.

"Tell me," I said.

"Rowena."

"Tell me why you never said his name."

He turned the flame down under the kettle.

His back was to me, and his shoulders were very tight.

"I will," he said. "All of it. In the morning. Tonight you've got a sick boy in your head and a mark on your neck you've just found out about, and I'd rather you slept first."

"You don't get to decide when I'm ready."

"No." He turned around. "I don't."

His eyes were wet, and his voice was rough.

"Then tell me one true thing," I said. "Right now. Just one."

"You're my mate."

"That's not a thing you did."

"It's the only thing I'm certain of," he said. "I felt it the second I saw you. Everything else I got wrong."

I crossed the room.

I did not know if I wanted to hit him or kiss him.

I put both hands flat on his chest, and his heart was racing under them.

"Don't talk," I said.

"Ro."

"For tonight, don't talk."

He looked at my mouth.

Then he picked me up by the thighs, and I wrapped my legs around his waist, and he kissed me.

It was hot and hard, with teeth, and I tasted salt.

He carried me into the bedroom and kicked the door shut.

He laid me on the bed and pulled my shirt over my head.

His hands shook, and his mouth went to my throat, my collarbone, the swell of my breast through the cotton.
