Chapter 11: Three Nights

At dawn the three of us sat around the kitchen table with a pot of plain coffee and nobody wanted to be first to speak.

Delaney had not slept.

Neither had Darian.

I had counted four times that his hand went to his chest and came away again, and each time I had put my fingers on the back of his wrist until it settled.

He had stopped apologizing.

That was how I knew he was in pain.

"Three nights," I said. "That's what Mack thinks. The oil's in your skin, Delaney, and in his blood. If you stay clean of it for three nights, it begins to leave."

"And the burning?" Delaney said.

"Gets worse before it stops."

"For both of us."

"For both of you."

She turned her cup around in her hands.

"And he," she said, with a small motion of her chin at Darian, "stays close to you the whole time."

"He stays close to a human," I said. "I'm only the thing that makes it stop hurting."

"That isn't all you are." She said it flatly, like a fact she was reading off a form. "I watched his face at the council. I was looking for it and I couldn't find a bond, only a man who had looked at one person for years."

I did not know where to look.

Darian looked at the table.

"I came to take your place," Delaney said. "I didn't know that's what it was. I want you to hear me say that, because I said a lot of cruel things."

"You did."

"You'd have said worse."

"I would have said it quieter," I said, and, to my surprise, she laughed.
