Chapter 15: Clean
Darian's POV
I locked the bedroom door and leaned my back against it.
It was the only way I could stop myself crossing the room in one stride.
Calla stood by the window with the afternoon light on one side of her face.
She still had Joan's charcoal on her sleeve and a smear of it on her jaw.
I had never in my life wanted anything so much.
"You're staring," she said.
"I'm going to stare for a minute."
"We've got four hours."
"Then I've got three hours and fifty-eight minutes to do this properly." I pushed off the door. "Come here."
She came.
She stopped an arm's length from me and held out her hand, palm up.
I did not put anything down beside it.
I took it in mine.
Her fingers were cold, and they closed around mine hard.
The wolf in me did not surge or pull or rage.
He lay down in my chest and went quiet.
"Hello," Calla said, very softly.
"Hello."
"It doesn't hurt."
"No." I lifted her hand and put my mouth against the inside of her wrist.
I had breathed there the night before and not dared to kiss.
"Does this?"
She shook her head.
I kissed her palm, and the heel of her hand, and each knuckle, slowly.
She watched me do it with her lips parted.
"Darian," she said. "You said you would not be fast. You're allowed to be a little fast."
"I'm not."
"I've waited..."
"I know exactly how long you've waited."
I drew her in by the wrist until her body met mine.
"So have I. That's why."
I kissed her.
It began as it had in the study, with her mouth warm and open, but this time nothing stopped it.
Her hands came up under my torn shirt and pushed it off my shoulders, and I let it fall.
She pressed her palms flat to my bare chest.
The quiet in me got louder, a hum that ran all the way down my legs.
"Everything I touch hums," she whispered.
"It's you."
"Is it supposed to?"
"I don't know. I've never done this with my mate."
I found the hem of her sweater and drew it up and over her head.
"We'll find out."
Her bra was plain white cotton, and she had gone pink to her collarbones.
I put my mouth on the pulse in her throat and felt it leap.
She made a small sound, and her hands went to my belt.
I caught both her wrists and held them still against my ribs.
"Ah," she said. "You're doing the Alpha thing."
"I'm doing the thing where I get to look at you."
"You can look while I'm..."
