Chapter 23: The Seat
The Council sat again in the morning, and this time they gave me a chair.
It stood at the end of their long table under the antlers, a plain carved oak chair that someone had carried in from the dining room.
I had not slept much.
The mark on my neck itched under my collar, and I could not stop touching it.
Dain stood below the table, in the place where Halvard had stood.
He had been told to, and he had gone without a word.
"Wynn Bramley," said the eldest. "The river pack of Hollowmere has been without an Alpha for eight years."
"Yes, Elder."
"The Council has met on it overnight. By the Old Challenge you answered for your blood, and by the shift you proved it. Your father's seat is empty. Do you take it?"
My mouth was dry again.
I thought of a girl in a grey dress, copying other people's records by one oil lamp.
I thought of the man who had written *Papa* at the bottom of a page.
"I take it," I said.
"Then rise as Alpha of Hollowmere."
I stood.
The five of them stood with me, and behind me two hundred wolves of Ironbark did the same, scraping their benches back.
It was a ragged, rustling sound, and I felt it in my knees.
On the bench by the wall, the young man with the scarred eyebrow whistled through his teeth.
The tall girl elbowed him.
"Sit," said the eldest. "Alpha."
I sat in my chair at the end of the table, and my hands lay flat on the oak.
"The Council has one more matter," said the eldest. "The Crown."
Dain did not move.
