Chapter 11: One Night

In the study doorway, Brynn had said only, "He won't settle for me," and Lorcan had walked out after her.

I had walked out the other way, and I hadn't looked back.

I waited until Molly told me my body was finished healing, and then I sent for him.

Molly carried the message across the line herself.

It was a scrap of paper: The fishing cabin. Tonight. Come alone.

The cabin sat on the Ironwood shore.

It was a one-room place with a stove, a bed and a window onto black water.

I lit the stove myself.

My hands were steady, which surprised me.

He knocked once.

When I opened the door he stood on the step in a dark coat.

The cold was coming off him, and he didn't touch the frame.

He didn't ask to come in.

I stepped aside, and he did.

"Before anything," I said. "You said you'd sign."

"I did."

"One night."

"I know the terms."

"Then take off your coat."

His eyes went black.

He did it slowly, and hung it on the peg, and stood there in his shirt.

I crossed the room and pushed him down onto the edge of the bed.

"I lead," I said.

"All right."

"If I tell you to stop touching me, you stop."

"All right."

"If I tell you to touch me, you do it properly."

The thread between us hummed hot.

"Yes," he said, hoarse.

I unbuttoned his shirt one button at a time and watched his chest rise under my hands.

The long scar down his shoulder was still raised where my teeth had gone in.

I put my mouth on it.

He made a sound I'd heard a thousand times and not once in the last two weeks.

I felt it down the length of me.

I pulled my sweater over my head and dropped it.
